Weekly Update: June 7, 2024

The Biden Administration has approved the addition of Dallas County to the Presidential Disaster Declaration making assistance accessible for those impacted by last week's severe weather. Those impacted can now apply for The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Individual Assistance Program.

FEMA may be able to help you with home repairs, temporary housing, or property damage (appliances, furniture, vehicle, etc). You may also qualify for help with child care, medical, lodging, moving, and funeral expenses.

To apply: 

  • Visit disasterassistance.gov.
  • Install the FEMA app on your smartphone.
  • Contact the FEMA hotline from 6:00 AM to 10 PM at (800) 621-3362. This line is accessible in the majority of languages.

This aid is restricted to Dallas County citizens. 


DUNCANVILLE FIRE DEPARTMENT

The Fire Department responded to 152 calls for service in the past seven days, which included:

  • Emergency Medical Services: 98
  • Motor Vehicle Accidents: 11
  • House fire (Duncanville): 1
  • Cooking fire (Duncanville): 1
Regional Emergency Management Coordinator Lauren Sanchez and Emergency Management Specialist Raqheal Payne attended the Texas Emergency Management Conference in Ft. Worth, continuously monitored all of the severe storms that hit the DFW Metroplex, lead the Cedar Hill Emergency Operations Center training, conducted the Duncanville Continuity Of Operations Plan (COOP) with the Department Directors and conducted the monthly Outdoor Warning Siren (OWS) test for all four cities.

DUNCANVILLE POLICE DEPARTMENT

The Police Department welcomes the public to access www.crimemapping.com for resources; citizens can also sign up for crime alerts within their location's radius.

PARKS AND RECREATION

Parks

Crews have identified tree damage and conducted removal at various parks due to recent storms.

  •  Crews replaced damaged vegetation at Armstrong Park flower beds.

  •  The parking lot restriping at Alexander and Harrington Park has been scheduled.
  •  Staff scheduled the landscape installation at the Willow Run Drive entrance.
  •  Replacement of mulch at playgrounds will be scheduled in the upcoming weeks. 

Special Projects:

  • Crews assessed Armstrong Park and Harrington Park drainage improvements with Public Works.
  • Staff assisted with Development Review Committee (DRC) meetings by advising on landscape and vegetation.
  • Managed tree contractors with the removal of storm damage around the City.
  • Staff solicited bids for Danieldale Rd. median landscape maintenance.
  • Dean Construction to remediate trail damage at Quail Run Park has been confirmed. 
  • Staff confirmed janitorial services vendor for park facilities.
  • A vendor has been confirmed for an upgrade of remote-access door panels.
  • Staff scheduled plumbers to replace the flush valve at Armstrong Park men's Restroom.
  • Crews completed parking lot fencing for the Charles F. Ladd Nature Preserve.

Duncanville Fieldhouse

The 2024 B.O.S.S. Summer Camp registration begins on April 15.

Activities include field trips, dance, cooking, football, basketball, volleyball, gym games, table games, cheer, arts and crafts, and tumbling.

D.L. Hopkins Jr. Senior Center

Senior Meal Program: Monday through Thursday, everyone who dines with us will receive a breakfast bag and a boxed lunch to take home. On Fridays, each person will receive two breakfast bags and two boxed lunches to enjoy on Saturday and Sunday. This is due to additional state funding from the Dallas Area Agency on Aging (DAAA). The funding and expanded meal program will continue through the end of the fiscal year, September 30, 2024, and there is no additional cost to the City.

This year’s Best Southwest Juneteenth Celebration will be hosted by the City of Cedar Hill on Saturday, June 15, 2024, from 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM. Activities include food vendors, a variety of arts and crafts, live performances, and much more. The event will feature headliner Atlantic Starr, an American rhythm and blues band based in White Plains, New York, with supporting act Original Pinettes Brass Band, We Them Grays, and Paul Cannon Band. PUBLIC LIBRARY 
The Library held its annual Summer Reading Club Kickoff Party on Saturday, June 1. More than 700 excited guests joined the celebration and enjoyed various games, crafts, music, and free food. In-n-Out Burger gave away 600 meals, and Chick-fil-A provided cookies. Thank you to our great volunteers for all they do, as well as the Friends of the Library for supplying our grand prizes (four awesome bicycles) and hosting a craft.

This week, 286 book transfers were conducted between the best Southwest Libraries. 

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

 The Director of Economic Development has joined the team on a part-time basis as he continues to navigate moving his family from Illinois to Texas. He is expected to be full-time on July 1.

  • The following items were approved at the June 3 Duncanville Community and Economic Development Corporation (DCEDC) Special Called Meeting:
    • The DCEDC Board voted to approve the funding of the Trane Re-Purpose Analysis in the total amount of $48,000.
      DCEDC Board voted to approve an application for incentives by Cedar Park Shopping Center in an amount not to exceed $20,000 for ADA-related improvements.
  • The City Council approved the following items:
    •  The transfer agreement between the City of Duncanville and the Duncanville Community and Economic Development Corporation (DCEDC) for economic development activities.
    •  The incentive grant by the Duncanville Community and Economic Development Corporation (DCEDC) to Sharon’s Loving Home Health Care, LLC, in an amount not to exceed $6,473.35 for a building located at 436 North Main Street, Duncanville, Texas 75137.
  • The City Council received the final report on Economic Development in Duncanville from the MRB Group and a briefing on special events, processes, and reorganizational structure into Economic Development.
  •  On July 30, 2024, the City Council and the Duncanville Community and Economic Development Corporation (DCEDC) are planning a combined meeting to view the collaborative space at Wheatland Plaza.
  •  Ms. Lynnette Romero from Planning and Zoning has joined the Economic Development team.
  •  Economic Development is focusing on developing initiatives to increase the utilization of the Fieldhouse.

Street Division

  • Crews poured concrete for a utility cut repair on E. Cherry St.
  • Seventeen potholes were repaired on E. Redbird Ln., Silver Creek Dr., and Cedar Ridge Dr.
  • Three utility drainage locates were marked at various locations throughout the City.
  • Crews cleaned headwalls and removed 13 cubic yards of debris on W. Danieldale Rd., Briar Hill Cir., and E. Wheatland Rd.
  • Crews cut and removed fallen trees throughout the City due to the recent severe storms.

Utilities Division

  • Water usage was 45.5976 million gallons (MG) during this reporting period, May 27 – June 2, 2024, up from 42.9138 MG the previous week. The daily peak water demand occurred on Saturday, June 1, 2024, when 7.5252 MG of water was used. There was 3.78 inches of precipitation during this period.

Oriole Sidewalk Improvements

  • Meca Construction has moved east of Oriole Blvd. north of I20. The west side of Oriole Blvd. is 90% complete.

Ten Mile Creek Embankment and Drainage Improvements

  • There has been no change in updates to this project due to recent storms.

Wren Ave. and Oriole Blvd. Water Main Replacement I-20 Aerial Crossing

  • All water mains have been installed, connected, and in service. We are awaiting insulation for the water main on the utility bridge.

Softwood Dr. Sanitary Sewer Aerial Crossing Repair

  • Piers have been drilled. Crews are awaiting beam delivery.

Other Construction

  • Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) I-20 Construction Cockrell Hill Rd. to Hampton Rd. TxDOT is constructing new service roads and ramps from Cockrell Hill Rd. in Duncanville to Hampton Rd. in Dallas, including new bridges across US-67. This project also includes construction by TXDOT of a Texas U-Turn at US 67 and Cockrell Hill Rd. on the southwest side of the bridge, which is projected to be completed by Fall 2024, barring any unforeseen conditions. The entire project has an estimated completion date of September 2025.

 BUILDING INSPECTIONS
  • A total of 1,971 single-family rental properties have been registered to date, with zero new properties registered since the last update. Twenty-two inspections have been completed since the previous update; eleven passed, ten failed, and one was canceled. The primary reason for the failed inspections was the absence of a Grounded/Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) protection and missing carbon monoxide and smoke detectors.
  • Since the Single-Family Rental Registration Program inspections in June 2024, 185 Certificates of Occupancy have been re-issued.
  • This week, 82 Building inspections and 14 Health Inspections were conducted. The total amount of fees collected was $23,470.90.
  • This week, 97 permits were issued.
