Weekly Update: June 14, 2024

DisasterAssistance.gov logo

The Biden Administration has approved the addition of Dallas County to the Presidential Disaster Declaration making assistance accessible for those impacted by last week's severe weather. Those impacted can now apply for The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Individual Assistance Program.

FEMA may be able to help you with home repairs, temporary housing, or property damage (appliances, furniture, vehicle, etc). You may also qualify for help with child care, medical, lodging, moving, and funeral expenses.

To apply: 

  • Visit disasterassistance.gov.
  • Install the FEMA app on your smartphone.
  • Contact the FEMA hotline from 6:00 AM to 10 PM at (800) 621-3362. This line is accessible in the majority of languages.

This aid is restricted to Dallas County citizens. 


DUNCANVILLE FIRE DEPARTMENT

The Fire Department responded to 145 calls for service in the past seven days, which included:

    • Building Fire in Cedar Hill, (1) Vehicle Fire in DeSoto
  • EMS: 114
    • Motor Vehicle Accidents: 14

The Deputy Fire Marshal obtained his Fire & Life Safety certification.

Lauren Sanchez was awarded a Regional Service Excellence Award from the North Central Texas Council of Governments
Lauren Sanchez received the NCTCOG’s Regional Service Excellence Award today, June 13, during the Emergency Preparedness & Planning Committee (EPPC) Meeting at NCTCOG. Way to go, Lauren! 

DUNCANVILLE POLICE DEPARTMENT

The Police Department welcomes the public to access www.crimemapping.com for resources; citizens can also sign up for crime alerts within their location's radius.

  • The Police Department said farewell to Assistant Chief of Police Chris Freis and wished him luck in his new position as Chief of Police for the Town of Addison.
  • Sergeant Tijerina has been named the Interim Assistant Chief of Police.
  • On Friday, June 7, Officers Green and Goodwin were promoted to Sergeants.

PUBLIC LIBRARY

The Library’s Summer Reading Club programming continues! 

This week's highlights are:

  • The Dallas Zoo Animals program in the Library meeting rooms on Saturday, June 15, at 10:15 a.m.
  • Reading Bingo game sheets will be available for adults.

The Summer Reading Camp program had 285 participants from June 8 to June 13.

Upcoming Events

The Library has added a Little Free Fridge to our Pantry. The Pantry and the Fridge are open to anyone in need. Staff members can receive donations.
There are two new Curiosity Kits for checkout. Each kit has books and other materials on a specific topic. One of the latest kits is Geocaching, and the other is Birding. The other two kits are Hearth Health and Tarot.

  • Kaelin Cruz, Maintenance Worker I – Horticulture Division, is now a certified Texas Department of Agriculture Spray Applicator.
  • The fountain at Lakeside Park is scheduled to be repaired on Tuesday, June 18, 2024.
  • The tree survey for the dog park master plan at Rotary Park has begun.
  • Crews have improved the Willow Run entry Bed.
  • Crews continue tree maintenance and brush removal from storm damage.
  • Staff tested new cleaning products for park amenities.
  • Fencing at the Charles F. Ladd Nature Preserve parking lot is complete.
  • The Keep Duncanville Beautiful Board recognized the Summer 2024 Curb Appeal Properties and the Business Beautification Award at the June 4, 2024, City Council Regular Meeting.   • The Keep Duncanville Beautiful Board will host the Keep Texas Waterways Clean Community Cleanup event on Saturday, June 22, at the Charles F. Ladd Nature Preserve from 9:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M., weather permitting. Cleanup supplies will be provided.

The 2024 B.O.S.S. Summer Camp registration begins on April 15.

Activities include field trips, dance, cooking, football, basketball, volleyball, gym games, table games, cheer, arts and crafts, and tumbling.

D.L. Hopkins Jr. Senior Center

Senior Meal Program: Monday through Thursday, everyone who dines with us will receive a breakfast bag and a boxed lunch to take home. On Fridays, each person will receive two breakfast bags and two boxed lunches to enjoy on Saturday and Sunday. This is due to additional state funding from the Dallas Area Agency on Aging (DAAA). The funding and expanded meal program will continue through the end of the fiscal year, September 30, 2024, and there is no additional cost to the City.

This year’s Best Southwest Juneteenth Celebration will be hosted by the City of Cedar Hill on Saturday, June 15, 2024, from 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM. Activities include food vendors, a variety of arts and crafts, live performances, and much more. The event will feature headliner Atlantic Starr, an American rhythm and blues band based in White Plains, New York, with supporting act Original Pinettes Brass Band, We Them Grays, and Paul Cannon Band. After Atlantic Starr's anticipated set, stick around for a special drone show to conclude the evening festivities. This is a show you will not want to miss! Admission is FREE.

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

The Director of Economic Development has joined the team on a part-time basis as he continues to navigate moving his family from Illinois to Texas. He is expected to be full-time on July 1.

The Economic Development Department is:

  • Staff are developing Standard Operating Procedures for the Department to ensure continuity when assisting our citizens. This includes Incentive/Grant Applications, Purchase Order Requests, Special Use Permit Applications, Planning and Zoning, and Special Events.
  • Economic Development is assisting with the kiosk and working with Permits to assist citizens with their applications.
  • The department is undergoing some cosmetic changes to our space.

The following items are being prepared for the June 18, 2024, City Council Meeting Agenda:

  • One Source Plumbing Incentive Application ($280,000 for signage, landscaping, paving)
  • Cedar Park Shopping Center, Limited Liability Incentive Application ($20,000 for The Americans with Disabilities Act-related infrastructure improvements)

Utilities Division 

  • Water usage was 45.4582 million gallons (MG) during this reporting period, June 3 – June 9, 2024, down from 45.4976 MG the previous week. The daily peak water demand occurred on Friday, June 7, 2024, when 8.5356 MG of water was used. There was 1.38 inches of precipitation during this period. There was an estimated 42,000 gallons of water loss.

CIP Construction

  • Ten Mile Creek Embankment and Drainage Improvements
    • Stoic Construction has begun work on sites 1 and 2.
  • Wren Ave. and Oriole Blvd. Water Main Replacement I-20 Aerial Crossing
    • Insulation for the water main on the utility bridge is scheduled to begin in two weeks. 
  • Softwood Dr. Sanitary Sewer Aerial Crossing Repair
    • Crews are awaiting beam delivery. 

Other Construction

  • Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) I-20 Construction Cockrell Hill Rd. to Hampton Rd. TxDOT is constructing new service roads and ramps from Cockrell Hill Rd. in Duncanville to Hampton Rd. in Dallas, including new bridges across US-67. This project also includes construction by TXDOT of a Texas U-Turn at US 67 and Cockrell Hill Rd. on the southwest side of the bridge, which is projected to be completed by Fall 2024, barring any unforeseen conditions. The entire project has an estimated completion date of September 2025.

 BUILDING INSPECTIONS
  • A total of 1,971 single-family rental properties have been registered to date, with zero new properties registered since the last update. Fifteen inspections have been completed since the previous update; twelve passed, three failed, and one was canceled. The primary reason for the failed inspections was the absence of a Grounded/Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) protection and missing carbon monoxide and smoke detectors.
  • Since the Single-Family Rental Registration Program inspections in June 2024, 197 Certificates of Occupancy have been re-issued.
  • This week, 94 Building inspections and 14 Health Inspections were conducted. The total amount of fees collected was $14,975.00.
  • This week, 90 permits were issued.
