City of Duncanville

• A total of 1,973 single-family rental properties have been registered to date, with no new properties registered since the last update. 18 inspections have been completed since the previous update; 14 passed, 4 failed, and none were canceled. The primary reasons for the failed inspections were the absence of a Grounded/Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) protection, missing carbon monoxide and smoke detectors, and improper installation of water heaters.
  
• Since the Single-Family Rental Registration Program inspections in August 2024, 297 Certificates of Occupancy have been re-issued.
  
• This week, 72 Building inspections and 18 Health Inspections were conducted. The total amount of fees collected was $18,895.38.
  
• This week, 138 permits were issued.
  

City of Duncanville Names Chris Connealy as Lone Fire Chief Finalist

The City of Duncanville officials have narrowed the search for a new fire chief to a lone finalist, Mr. Chris Connealy.

The search for a new leader for the Duncanville Fire Department came after Fire Chief Sam Rohde retired in March of this year after nearly 40 years of service to the City of Duncanville. Twenty-seven candidates applied for the top position. Three were selected from that pool of highly qualified candidates to participate in two interview panels, which took place on August 15.

Mosquito Ground Spraying Schedueled for Thursday and Friday

The City of Duncanville, at the recommendation and in cooperation with Dallas County Health and Human Services (DCHHS), will be conducting ground spraying against mosquitoes on Thursday, August 29 and Friday, August 30, between the hours of 9:00 PM and 5:00 AM, weather permitting. The spraying is being conducted in response to the detection of West Nile Virus in mosquito traps located in the 75116 and 75137 zip codes. If the weather prohibits spraying on Thursday night, spraying will be conducted on Friday and Saturday nights. Spraying will be performed in the targeted area within the City of Duncanville (see the attached map). Residents living within the spray zone are encouraged to remain indoors and bring their pets inside during spraying.

Duncanville names longtime officer the city's next chief of police

Duncanville is one step closer to officially naming its new chief of police.

Last week, the city named longtime Duncanville police officer Matthew Stogner the lone finalist for the chief of police position. On Tuesday, the City Council will hear a resolution confirming his position and announce a date for the swearing-in ceremony.

• Detective Welling and Detective Berger received written commendations for their teamwork and dedication to selfless service, fantastic work!
  
• Sergeant Byrd and Officers Rodgers, Alvidrez, and Peterson were awarded Meritorious Conduct Bars for their professionalism and adherence to policy during a vehicle pursuit that lasted an hour and covered over 50 miles. Outstanding command, control, and teamwork all the way around. Several letters of appreciation were also coordinated between Chief Stogner and Sergeant Byrd for Southwest Regional Communications Center members, the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office, and the Mesquite Police Department.

Recreation Center

Ping-pong is becoming a popular activity on Thursday nights. Players range from intermediate to advanced skills. Occasionally, players will take the time to show younger players how to play. Spectators are also welcome. Ping-pong is FREE to members or $5.00 with a day pass.

Pickleball Youth Camp Recap:

Pickleball Camp – Over 20 participants joined us for the first-ever Pickleball Camp. During this three-day camp, participants learned the basics of the game, e.g., the court lines and rules, information on a single or double play, technique, scoring, etc. Players had the opportunity to participate in tournaments with 2 first-place winners, 2 second-place winners, and 2 third-place winners. Each participant also received a T-shirt. Thank you to Coach Richard and Councilmember Jeremy Koontz for coaching this camp. Staff are identifying new dates to host a 2-Day Pickleball Camp during the Christmas break. Stay tuned!

Concert in the Park feat. Hazard County – Saturday, September 7, 2024 | 7:00 PM

Join us on Saturday, September 7, at the Poe-Hobden Amphitheater at Armstrong Park for a Concert in the Park featuring Hazard County. This band has opened for big-name groups at Billy Bob – groups such as Travis Tritt, Kameron Marlowe, Shenandoah, and Jake Worthington. Participants can sing along to country favorites and dance the night away. Admission is FREE. The concert will begin at 7:00 PM. Don’t forget to bring your blanket or lawn chair.

Street Division

• Crews repaired twenty potholes at various locations throughout the City.

• The call-out crew removed a fallen tree blocking Beaver Creek Drive.
  
• Crews repaired concrete street pavement on Sanders Drive.
  
• Crews cleaned six stormwater inlets at various locations throughout the City.
  

Utilities Division 

Water usage was 73,243,800 gallons (MG) during this reporting period, August 19 – August 25, 2024, up from 69,321,400 MG the previous week. The daily peak water demand occurred on Tuesday, August 20, 2024, when 11,610,000 MG of water was used. There was 0.00 inches of precipitation during this period. There was an estimated 49,000 gallons of water loss, including one water main break. 

CIP Construction

• Wren Avenue and Oriole Boulevard Water Main Replacement I-20 Aerial Crossing
  
  • The preliminary walk-through for the project was performed, and a punch list has been generated. The final acceptance walkthrough is scheduled for Friday, August 30.

  • Crews await the welder to install the I-Beam.
  Ten Mile Creek Embankment and Drainage Improvements
  
  • Stoic is continuing to make progress with both Sites 1 and 2. The project is nearing completion and is scheduled to be completed in approximately four weeks.
    
• Oriole ADA Sidewalk Improvements
  
  • The project is nearing completion. Meca Construction has continued the sidewalk and curb ramp replacement south of I20.
  Harrington Park/Ten Mile
  
  • Texas Standard Construction has begun clearing the area to prepare for construction.
    

Other Construction

Texas Department of Transportation TxDOT) I-20 Construction Cockrell Hill Road to Hampton Road TxDOT is constructing new service roads and ramps from Cockrell Hill Road in Duncanville to Hampton Road in Dallas, including new bridges across US-67. This project also includes construction by TXDOT of a Texas U-Turn at US 67 and Cockrell Hill Road on the southwest side of the bridge, which is projected to be completed by Fall 2024, barring any unforeseen conditions. The entire project has an estimated completion date of September 2025.

City of Dallas Stormwater Project on Sorcey Road at White Ash – Dallas is working on installing an approved storm sewer.
