PERMITTING OUTAGE
Permitting will be unavailable starting Friday, August 9, 2024, at 4:00 PM through Tuesday, August 13, 2024, as the City of Duncanville transitions to a new self-service permitting system.

We thank you for your patience as we work to make improvements.

BUILDING INSPECTIONS
  • A total of 1,973 single-family rental properties have been registered to date, with no new properties registered since the last update. Fourteen inspections have been completed since the previous update; six passed, eight failed, and none were canceled. The primary reasons for the failed inspections were the absence of a Grounded/Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) protection, missing carbon monoxide and smoke detectors, and improper installation of water heaters.
  • Since the Single-Family Rental Registration Program inspections in August 2024, 2 Certificates of Occupancy have been re-issued.
  • This week, 79 Building inspections and 15 Health Inspections were conducted. The total amount of fees collected was $17,160.00.
  • This week, 75 permits were issued.

COMMUNICATIONS AND MARKETING 

3 Police Chief Candidates Advance to Interviews in Duncanville 08/05/2024
City Manager Douglas E. Finch and Assistant City Manager Robert D. Brown, Jr. have invited three police chief candidates to interview for the top leadership position in the Duncanville Police Department. The interviews will take place on Wednesday, August 7, 2024.

Ground Mosquito Spraying Scheduled for Thursday and Friday 08/07/2024

 The City of Duncanville, at the recommendation and in cooperation with Dallas County Health and Human Services (DCHHS), will be conducting ground spraying against mosquitoes on Thursday, August 8 and Friday, August 9, between the hours of 9:00 PM and 5:00 AM, weather permitting. The spraying is being conducted in response to the detection of West Nile Virus in mosquito traps located in the 75116 and 75137 zip codes. If the weather prohibits spraying on Thursday night, spraying will be conducted on Friday and Saturday nights. Spraying will be performed in the targeted area within the City of Duncanville. Residents living within the spray zone are encouraged to remain indoors and bring their pets inside during spraying.

DUNCANVILLE FIRE DEPARTMENT

The Fire Department responded to 142 calls for service in the past seven days, which included:

  • Fires:
    • Zero fires
  • Emergency Medical Service: 96
  • Motor Vehicle Accidents: 14

The Fire Prevention Division is in the final stages of preparing the EnerGov program for fire-related permits to go live on August 13, 2024.


 

DUNCANVILLE POLICE DEPARTMENT
The Police Department welcomes the public to access www.crimemapping.com for resources; citizens can sign up for crime alerts within their location's radius. 
  • The Police Department’s Crime Prevention Officer and Citizen on Patrol volunteers distributed Burglary Report Cards at Kroger.
  • Several Police Department officers were awarded various honors for their persistent selflessness and dedication, which we expect from our officers. Commendation Bars, Certificates of Merit, and written commendations were presented.
  • Lieutenant R. Wilcots earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice and graduated Magna Cum Laude. Furthermore, he was recognized for his 25 years of service with the Police Department.
  • The Police Department was presented with the Lexipol Connect Silver Award. This was given to recognize the Duncanville Police Department’s excellence in online training management.

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
  • City Council approved a $280,000 grant to One Source Plumbing, LLC
  • City Staff are planning for the Mexican Independence Celebration
  • Staff attended the Dallas Black Chamber of Commerce Executive Business Session
  • Staff meet with the owner of La Fondita regarding a possible grant application.
  • Staff met with a real estate group interested in Former CVS, 615 S. Cockrell Hill

  • The City will celebrate Mexican Independence Day on Monday, September 16, 2024, from 4:00 PM to 10:00 PM. The festivities include an El Grito with the Mexican Consulate, a parade, music, food, and fun at Armstrong Park, 100 James Collins Blvd, Duncanville, TX. PARKS AND RECREATION
D.L. Hopkins Jr. Senior Center

Senior Meal Program: Monday through Thursday, everyone who dines with us will receive a breakfast bag and a boxed lunch to take home. On Fridays, each person will receive two breakfast bags and two boxed lunches to enjoy on Saturday and Sunday. This is due to additional state funding from the Dallas Area Agency on Aging (DAAA). The funding and expanded meal program will continue through the end of the fiscal year, September 30, 2024, and there is no additional cost to the City.

Pickleball Youth Camp Recap:

Pickleball Camp – Over 20 participants joined us for the first-ever Pickleball Camp. During this three-day camp, participants learned the basics of the game, e.g., the court lines and rules, information on a single or double play, technique, scoring, etc. Players had the opportunity to participate in tournaments with 2 first-place winners, 2 second-place winners, and 2 third-place winners. Each participant also received a T-shirt. Thank you to Coach Richard and Councilmember Jeremy Koontz for coaching this camp. Staff are identifying new dates to host a 2-Day Pickleball Camp during the Christmas break. Stay tuned!

Movies in the Park: Top Gun Maverick

Hazard County Concert

Concert in the Park feat. Hazard County – Saturday, September 7, 2024 | 7:00 PM

Join us on Saturday, September 7, at the Poe-Hobden Amphitheater at Armstrong Park for a Concert in the Park featuring Hazard County. This band has opened for big-name groups at Billy Bob – groups such as Travis Tritt, Kameron Marlowe, Shenandoah, and Jake Worthington. Participants can sing along to country favorites and dance the night away. Admission is FREE. The concert will begin at 7:00 PM. Don’t forget to bring your blanket or lawn chair.

  • Variance Request at 10 Fairway Drive.
    • Allow the construction of a new home on a lot width of 87 feet; the current zoning code requires a lot width of 90 feet within the subject property’s zoning district.
  • Two (2) Special Exception Requests at 706 Palm Avenue.
    • Allow an existing structure that is 804 square feet and 20 feet in height; current zoning code requires a maximum square footage of 400 square feet and a maximum height of 16 feet.

    • A Town Hall Meeting is scheduled for August 13, 2024.
  • Proposed New Development at 626 Crestside Drive
    • Building Plans have been approved and a pre-construction meeting was held on July 23, 2024. Staff waiting for applicant to pay permit fees and begin construction.

PUBLIC WORKS 

Street Division

  • Crews removed fallen trees on Limetree Lane and Cambridge Drive from the right-of-way.
  • Drive approach tie-in on Martin Luther Circle has been repaired.
  • The drainage blockage on Merribrook Trail has been removed.
  • Crews repaired thirty-eight potholes on East Camp Wisdom Road, Skyline Drive, Quail Run, East Danieldale Road, West Wheatland Road, Cockrell Hill Road, Duncanville Road, and West Redbird Lane.
  • Crews repaired concrete on Seabrook Drive (sidewalk), Bradley Drive (drive approach), Amelia Street (sidewalks), and Silver Creek Drive (sidewalk).

Utilities Division 

Water usage was 56,248,400 gallons (MG) during this reporting period, July 29 – August 2, 2024, down from 57,167,600 MG the previous week. The daily peak water demand occurred on Friday, August 2, 2024, when 9,782,200 MG of water was used. There was 1.2 inches of precipitation during this period. There was an estimated 207,875 gallons of water loss.

CIP Construction

  • Wren Avenue and Oriole Boulevard Water Main Replacement I-20 Aerial Crossing
    • The project is near completion, and the contractor is set to complete the final project items.
  • Softwood Drive Sanitary Sewer Aerial Crossing Repair
    • Crews await the welder to install the I-Beam.
  • Ten Mile Creek Embankment and Drainage Improvements
    • Crews are installing gabions at Site 1 – Row 5
    • Crews excavated the last 40-foot section of Site 2 – Rows 1 and 2.
    • Crews drilled the last four rock anchors at site 2.
  • Oriole ADA Sidewalk Improvements
    • Three driveways have been poured on the east side of Oriole south of I-20.
  • Harrington Park/Ten Mile
    • The Duncanville City Council awarded the contract for Harrington Park and Ten Mile Lane Wastewater Aerial Reroutes and Improvements to Texas Standard Construction on May 21, 2024. Staff held the preconstruction meeting with the contractor on July 18, 2024. Construction will commence soon.

Other Construction

Texas Department of Transportation TxDOT) I-20 Construction Cockrell Hill Road to Hampton Road TxDOT is constructing new service roads and ramps from Cockrell Hill Road in Duncanville to Hampton Road in Dallas, including new bridges across US-67. This project also includes construction by TXDOT of a Texas U-Turn at US 67 and Cockrell Hill Road on the southwest side of the bridge, which is projected to be completed by Fall 2024, barring any unforeseen conditions. The entire project has an estimated completion date of September 2025.

City of Dallas Stormwater Project on Sorcey Road at White Ash – Dallas is working on installing an approved storm sewer.
