Battalion Chief Robert Gideon retired from active duty on March 30, 2024. He served Duncanville for 35 years and six months. Congratulations to Robert, and we wish him all the best for a well-deserved retirement!

Regional Emergency Management Operations Coordinator Lauren Sanchez continues to prepare the region for the solar eclipse. She has held several meetings with the public safety departments, school districts, and each city’s planning team. Ms. Sanchez also participated in the Dallas County Hazard Mitigation planning process.

The move-in process for the new Fire Station continues. Crews have done a fantastic job organizing it. 

The Duncanville Police Department will host a Light of Hope event on April 25 at Lakeside Park in observance of Crime Victim’s Rights Week.

Officer Arias and Sergeant Byrd attended a Strategic Public Information Officer course hosted by the Center for American and International Law. This course covered topics from planning community messaging to cultivating relationships with local media.

The Police Department will host a Civil Service exam on June 8. Learn more.

Accounting & Reporting – Week of March 28 – April 3: 

• Electronic Fund Transfer (EFT) Payments: 45 invoices were processed, totaling $536,046.62.
• Check Payments: 32 invoices were processed, totaling $147,361.33.

Projects

Armstrong Park

• Staff removed fencing and opened the Kidsville playground.
  
• Installation of sod has been completed throughout Kidsville.
  
• Crews have installed security cameras at parks.
  
• The new crab at Kidsville Splashpad has been painted.
  
• Daily procedures have been updated to perform preventative maintenance at Kidsville playground.
  
• Crews installed additional signage at Kidsville.
  
• The restroom at Kidsville has been updated to meet Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements.

Parks

• Crews repaired irrigation heads.
  
• The fountain at Harrington Park has been repaired.
  
• Crews began to install seasonal plants throughout the City.
  
• Crews performed clean-up operations at parks throughout the City.
  
• Down trees at Parks have been removed.
  
• Crews performed athletic field maintenance. 
  
• Staff conducted scheduled tree maintenance.

Easter Eggstravaganza RECAP

Over 2,000 guests joined us for this year’s Easter Eggstravaganza event. Kids of all ages, along with their parents, played tug-a-war, balloon toss, bucket splash, sack races, bounce houses, and an Easter Egg Hunt. There were four Easter Egg Hunt Zones (0-4, 5-8, 9-12, 13 and up), music, and dancing. The Easter Bunny spent the entire time taking pictures with children and parents.

Kidsville Grand Opening – Saturday, April 6, 2024 | 4:00 PM

Join us for the anticipated Grand Opening of the new Kidsville Playground and Splash Pad at Armstrong Park. Attendees can play, splash, enjoy free hot dogs and drinks, and much more!

Dark in the Park: A Solar Eclipse Festival

Join us for Dark in the Park, an exhilarating Solar Eclipse Festival beginning on Sunday, April 7, 2024, from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM and continuing Monday, April 8, 2024, from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM. This eagerly anticipated two-day event, set to coincide with the 2024 solar eclipse, promises an unforgettable experience for residents and visitors alike.

On Sunday, April 7, enjoy the electrifying sounds of The Emerald City Band. 
Alongside live entertainment, attendees can explore vendors offering unique goods and services and indulge in family-friendly activities, including a thrilling zipline adventure against the night sky. 

On Monday, April 8, attendees can secure their ideal spot for witnessing the solar eclipse. 
A talented DJ will keep the energy high with an eclectic mix of tunes. Vendors and family activities will ensure there’s something for everyone to enjoy. Plus, free eclipse sunglasses will be provided to the first 2,500 attendees for a safe and enjoyable viewing experience.

Duncanville 300 Jr. Grand Prix – Saturday, April 20, 2024 | 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM

The Duncanville 300 Jr. Grand Prix is back! Join us for a fun event at the Duncanville Recreation Center on Saturday, April 20. We have just over 10 Big Wheel tricycles for races that will take place upstairs on the walking track. In addition, we will build a mini track for the tikes on the West court in the gym. Concert in the Park feat. Hazard County – Saturday, April 27, 2024 | 7:00 PM

Join us on Saturday, April 27, at the Poe-Hobden Amphitheater at Armstrong Park for a Concert in the Park feat. Hazard County. This band has opened for big-name groups at Billy Bobs, such as Travis Tritt, Kameron Marlowe, Shenandoah, and Jake Worthington. Street Division

• A fallen tree from the Utility easement at N. Home Street, W. Danieldale Rd., and Cedar Hill Rd. have been removed. 
  
• Fourteen right-of-way utility locates have been marked throughout the City.
  
• Crews poured an ADA ramp at Magnolia Ln. and Acton Ave.
  
• Sixteen potholes have been patched on Acton Ave., E. Redbird Ln., Cockrell Hill Rd., and Alexander Ave.
  
• Drive approach tie-ins were repaired at Linkcrest Dr., La Plata Dr., and Wren Ave.
  
• Crews planted sod in drainage right-of-way on Jellison Blvd.

Capital Improvement Projects (CIP) Construction

Fire Station

• Temporary irrigation is scheduled to be removed by April 5.
  
• Core Construction is continuing to complete punch list items. 
  

Cherry Alley Phase 1

• The project is complete, and the final inspection will be scheduled for this week. 
  
• The alley is open for residents’ use. 

E. Danieldale Rd. Reconstruction and Utility Improvements Project

• Oncor will install power in the next ten days to light up the monument and activate the new controllers. 

Ten Mile Creek Embankment and Drainage Improvements

• The cofferdam has been installed, and a ramp to one of the construction sites has been constructed. 

Wren Ave. and Oriole Blvd. Water Main Replacement I-20 Aerial Crossing

• Crews are installing the 12” water line over the storm sewer on Oriole Blvd. and the 12” water main on the south side of I-20 service road.

Softwood Dr. Sanitary Sewer Aerial Crossing Repair

• Construction has commenced. Crews set up traffic control and saw-cut the street and curb.

Neighborhood Services Completed 4 Abatements at the following locations:

A total of 1,970 single-family rental properties have been registered to date, with two new properties registered since the last update. Nineteen inspections have been completed since the previous update; nine passed, ten failed, and 0 were canceled. The primary reasons for the failed inspections were the absence of GFCI protection and missing carbon monoxide and smoke detectors.

Since the Single-Family Rental Registration Program inspections in April 2024, 112 Certificates of Occupancy have been re-issued.

This week, 94 Building inspections and 22 health Inspections were conducted. The total amount of fees collected was $27,386.50.

This week, 120 permits were issued.
