Summons & Verification

Jurors are to bring the juror summons form with them. A juror verification form will be furnished to any juror who needs one for their employer.

 

Statutory QUALIFICATIONS

A person is qualified to serve as a juror if that person:

  • Is at least 18 years old
  • Is a citizen of this state and of the city in which one is to serve as a juror
  • Is qualified under the constitution and laws to vote in the city in which one is to serve as juror
  • Is of sound mind and good moral character
  • Is able to read and write
  • Has not been convicted of a felony
  • Is not under indictment or other legal accusation of misdemeanor or felony theft or any other felony
  • Has not served as a petit juror for six days during the preceding three months in a county court or during the preceding six months in the district court

Statutory EXEMPTIONS

The following persons and no others may claim an exemption from jury service if that person:

  • Has legal custody of a child or children under the age of 15 years old (if jury service by that person would necessitate leaving the child or children without adequate supervision)
  • Is more than 75 years old
  • Is a student of public or private secondary school
  • Is enrolled and in actual attendance at an institution of higher education.
  • Is the primary caretaker of a person who is an invalid (unable to care for himself or herself)
  • Is an officer or an employee of the Senate, House of Representatives, or any department, commission, board, office, or other agency in the legislative branch of state government
  • Has served as a petit juror in the county during the 24-month period preceding the date he / she is to appear for jury service
  • Is a member of the United States military forces serving on active duty and deployed to a location away from their home station and out of their county of residence

Excuses for other reasons should be proposed to the court at the call of the jury roll.
