BUILDING INSPECTIONS
  • A total of 1,973 single-family rental properties have been registered to date, with no new properties registered since the last update. 21 inspections have been completed since the previous update; 18 passed3 failed, and none were canceled. The primary reasons for the failed inspections were the absence of a Grounded/Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) protection, missing carbon monoxide and smoke detectors, and improper installation of water heaters.
  • Since the Single-Family Rental Registration Program inspections in August 2024, 315 Certificates of Occupancy have been re-issued.
  • This week, 62 Building inspections and 15 Health Inspections were conducted. The total amount of fees collected was $22,611.88.
  • This week, 199 permits were issued.
COMMUNICATIONS AND MARKETING 

Mosquito Ground Spraying Schedueled for Thursday and Friday

The City of Duncanville, at the recommendation and in cooperation with Dallas County Health and Human Services (DCHHS), will be conducting ground spraying against mosquitoes on Thursday, September 5 and Friday, September 6, between the hours of 9:00 PM and 5:00 AM, weather permitting. The spraying is being conducted in response to the detection of West Nile Virus in mosquito traps located in the 75116 and 75137 zip codes. If the weather prohibits spraying on Thursday night, spraying will be conducted on Friday and Saturday nights. Spraying will be performed in the targeted area within the City of Duncanville (see the attached map). Residents living within the spray zone are encouraged to remain indoors and bring their pets inside during spraying.

DUNCANVILLE FIRE DEPARTMENT
Duncanville firefighters participated in regional training that focused on vehicle extrication

The Duncanville Fire Department welcomed Fire Chief Chris Connealy to the family! Chief Connealy brings a wealth of experience to our department after serving as Fire Chief for the City of Houston and Cedar Park, as the State Fire Marshal, and as the Emergency Operations Coordinator for Williamson County. Welcome, Chief Connealy!

Duncanville firefighters participated in regional training that focused on vehicle extrication. Regional Training Chief Mark Madrid coordinated the training with Duncanville, Desoto, Cedar Hill, and Lancaster firefighters to attend the training. A huge Thank You to J&S Towing for allowing the training to be held at their towing yard!

The Fire Department responded to 165 calls for service* in the past seven days, which included:

  • Fires:
    • 3 vehicle fires - 2 in Duncanville and 1 in Cedar Hill, 1 dumpster fire in Duncanville
  • Emergency Medical Service: 99
  • Motor Vehicle Accidents: 18

Emergency Management:

Emergency Management Operations Coordinator Lauren Sanchez, Emergency Management Specialist Raqheal Payne, and Emergency Management Intern Tabetha Kwasnica Participated in Lancaster Public Assistance Exploratory call with TDEM and FEMA, Hosted Duncanville High School/Dallas County Public Health POD Exercise planning meeting, Attended Ellis County Emergency Managers meeting, Attended Regional Public Education Meeting and Participated in Cedar Hill Grant Award Kick-Off Meeting with TDEM and FEMA.

Fire Prevention:

  • Completed a total of 10 Plan Reviews, 1 Hydro-Visual, 1 Fire Alarm Acceptance test, 2 Certificate of Occupancy inspections, 3 Development Review meetings
  • The Fire Prevention Division attended a Paramedic Continuing Education class.

DUNCANVILLE POLICE DEPARTMENT
The Police Department welcomes the public to access www.crimemapping.com for resources; citizens can sign up for crime alerts within their location's radius.

  • Detective Welling and Officer Rawlins conducted twelve Vehicle Identification Number inspections.
  • Session number 63 of our Citizens Police Academy has begun! This is a valuable program offered by the Police Department to bridge the gap between the community and their police officers. We welcome the twelve participants and look forward to educating them on police roles and responsibilities.

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

The staff of Duncanville Community & Economic Development Corporation (DCEDC) attended Retail Live! South Central 2024. Retail Live! is an immersive industry event where retail professionals and vendors gather to explore the latest trends, technologies, and innovations shaping the retail landscape. It features networking opportunities, dynamic presentations, and interactive sessions that spark ideas and drive business growth.

CITY-SPONSORED SPECIAL EVENTS

  • The City will celebrate Mexican Independence Day on Monday, September 16, 2024, from 4:00 PM to 10:00 PM. West Nile Virus (WNV) Samples Results

To prevent the spread of mosquitoes, residents should remove all areas of standing water. Residents should also report all pools that are not well maintained and abandoned homes where mosquitoes are likely to breed to either City of Duncanville Health Services by calling (972) 780-5000 or through the OurDuncanville app, available on the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.

Everyone should continue to protect themselves against the West Nile Virus by using insect repellent containing DEET. Citizens are also encouraged to remain indoors during dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active.

PARKS AND RECREATION
D.L. Hopkins Jr. Senior Center

Senior Meal Program: Monday through Thursday, everyone who dines with us will receive a breakfast bag and a boxed lunch to take home. On Fridays, each person will receive two breakfast bags and two boxed lunches to enjoy on Saturday and Sunday. This is due to additional state funding from the Dallas Area Agency on Aging (DAAA). The funding and expanded meal program will continue through the end of the fiscal year, September 30, 2024, and there is no additional cost to the City.

  • Crews repaired irrigation at Lions Park
  • A water fountain at Red Bird Park was repaired and cleaned
  • Crews repaired vandalized Reduced Pressure Zone (a valve device that protects and keeps contaminated water from backflowing into fresh water) components at Harrington Park
  • Crews continued audit and repair of Highway 67 irrigation
  • Hedges along the Recreation Center East parking lot have been trimmed
  • Bed and tree maintenance was conducted at Armstrong Park, Senior Center, Recreation Center, Lakeside Park, and Oriole medians
  • Crews applied pesticides to landscape beds
  • Tree irrigation bags were added to refill the existing at Lakeside and Rotary Parks
  • Crews mowed the athletic fields and removed excess clippings at Harrington Park
  • The athletic fields at Harrington Park were fertilized this week
  • Crews removed wasp/ yellow jacket nests at various playgrounds
  • Staff performed tree maintenance at Lions Park
  • Staff placed outdoor restroom signage on doors
  • Crews removed two dead trees from Service Center

  • Mississippi Brickman completed the repair of the Armstrong Park historic brick paver trail

  • Started the Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies Self-Assessment
  • The Ladd Nature Preserve Master Plan Advisory Committee met on Wednesday, September 5, with consultants from Halff, Lake Flato, and Blackland Collaborative. The meeting was very productive, solidifying the overall desire for conservation and visitor engagement with the land. The meeting also included positive comments from Mr. And Mrs. Ladd, who was in attendance.

Hazard County Concert

Concert in the Park feat. Hazard County – Saturday, September 7, 2024 | 7:00 PM

Join us on Saturday, September 7, at the Poe-Hobden Amphitheater at Armstrong Park for a Concert in the Park featuring Hazard County. This band has opened for big-name groups at Billy Bob – groups such as Travis Tritt, Kameron Marlowe, Shenandoah, and Jake Worthington.   • A Statement of Qualifications due March 26, 2024, at 2:00 PM
  • Evaluations were completed, and 3 firms were selected.
  • Recently, the Comprehensive Plan Committee selected 1 firm.
  • Selected firm for Comprehensive Plan Update discussed during a work session at the July 16, 2024, City Council meeting.
  • The selected firm’s contract was signed at the Duncanville Community Economic Development Corporation Board on July 30, 2024, for approval.
  • Discussion took place at the August 6, 2024, City Council meeting regarding kick-off of The Comprehensive Plan Update.

PUBLIC WORKS

Street Division

  • Crews repaired forty potholes at various locations throughout the City.
  • The asphalt paving on Cedar Hill Road has been repaired.
  • Crews repaired the concrete sidewalk on Oriole Boulevard.
  • Twenty-five stormwater inlets at various locations were repaired throughout the city.
  • Brush impeding drainage at various locations throughout the City has been removed.

Utilities Division 

Water usage was 48,697,000 gallons during this reporting period, August 26 – September 1, 2024, down from 73,243,800 gallons the previous week. The daily peak water demand occurred on Tuesday, August 27, 2024, when 7,651,000 gallons of water was used. There was 0.00 inches of precipitation during this period. There was an estimated 734,916 gallons of water loss, including one water main break.

CIP Construction

  • Wren Avenue and Oriole Boulevard Water Main Replacement I-20 Aerial Crossing
    • The final acceptance walkthrough was completed on Friday, August 30. Staff is working with the contractor to close out the project.
    Softwood Drive Sanitary Sewer Aerial Crossing Repair
    • The I-Beam has been installed.
    Ten Mile Creek Embankment and Drainage Improvements
    • The project will be ready for a pre-final inspection by the end of September.
  • Oriole ADA Sidewalk Improvements
    • The project is nearing completion. The contractor is making progress to finish the project.
    Harrington Park/Ten Mile
    • Texas Standard Construction has installed approximately 330 linear feet of 15” sewer mainline and connected to the Trinity River Authority’s line. Bypass pumping is no longer required.

Other Construction

Texas Department of Transportation TxDOT) I-20 Construction Cockrell Hill Road to Hampton Road TxDOT is constructing new service roads and ramps from Cockrell Hill Road in Duncanville to Hampton Road in Dallas, including new bridges across US-67. This project also includes construction by TXDOT of a Texas U-Turn at US 67 and Cockrell Hill Road on the southwest side of the bridge, which is projected to be completed by Fall 2024, barring any unforeseen conditions. The entire project has an estimated completion date of September 2025.

City of Dallas Stormwater Project on Sorcey Road at White Ash – Dallas is working on installing an approved storm sewer.
